Further to our recent article on Carboy Cleaning Tablets we also wanted to try out a similar product for cleaning Growlers, which for those of you who are not familiar Growlers are 1/2 US gallon containers for taking beer home from breweries. They are usually made out of glass but can also be made out of metal or plastic.
Growler Cleaning Tablets are manufactured by Meister National Chemicals Inc and sold as a plastic tub of 25 tablets, retailing at about $5 per tub.
Directions
- Fill Growler with warm water.
- Add 1 tablet and let dissolve.
- Soak for 10 minutes.
- Empty Growler and rinse thoroughly.
- Repeat if necessary.
- Sanitize if required.
Tips for Heavy Soils:
- Use 2 tablets.
- Let soak overnight, up to 24 hours.
- Increase water temperature.
Product test
I was going on a brewery visit and just in case I wanted to bring any of the draft beers back with me I decided to grab one of my brown glass Growlers and give it a clean. I followed the instructions by popping inside one tablet then filled it up with warm water.
The tablet dissolved pretty quickly and created some bubbles. After leaving it for 10 minutes or so I emptied the growler and gave it a thorough rinse followed by sanitizing it. Very straight forward.
Verdict
My usual method of cleaning a Growler would be with some soap and a bottle brush. The tablets reduce the effort but there was no heavy soiling as I always rinse the Growler once it is emptied anyway.
The biggest benefot of this product I believe would be on a road trip or vacation as the tablets would save having to pack a bottle brush and can easily fit in a car glove compartment or suit case plus at a cost of 20 cents per use it is a very low cost solution. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to BSG Handcraft for sending me the Growler Cleaning Tablets by Craft Meister to try. BSG Handcraft can be found here:
