Hello beer lovers and welcome to another edition of the NorCal Beer Blog’s brew review.
Tonight’s featured beer is Prairie Artisan Ales Puncheon Farmhouse Ale Fermented in Oak Barrels. I believe I acquired this bottle at Caps & Taps in Dublin, but if I didn’t…ah well…always a good time to give them a plug! As I’ve said many times before, please visit local shops and support them. The guys at Caps & Taps (here) are really cool and if you go in there tell ‘em you heard about them here.
From the Prairie Artisan Ales website: “Puncheon is a farmhouse rye ale fermented in large oak barrels with several different wild bacteria strains. Tropical citrus notes and sourness can be detected with hints of oak.”
Let’s get started!
Appearance: Pours a pale and cloudy straw color with a nice bone colored head and soapy lacing.
Aroma: Fruity and funky, citric…mostly lemon, minerals, oak, light bready yeast and a touch of hay.
Taste: Grapefruit, lemon, tart, rye spice, Brett funk, fruity, light bready malts
