New Mexico breweries aim high as the World Beer Cup competition returns

A flashback to 2016 when three brewers were asked to bring their World Beer Cup awards to a group interview. Then-Nexus brewer Kaylynn McKnight and Boxing Bear brewer Justin Hamilton did good. La Cumbre’s Jeff Erway, well, not so much.

The World Beer Cup, a prestigious biennial competition of breweries across the globe, has been kind and cruel to New Mexico breweries in the past.

In 2016, seven breweries brought home seven medals, including gold for Boxing Bear, La Cumbre, and Nexus. In 2018, only Quarter Celtic brought home a medal.

There was much anticipation for the next WBC, which was set to be announced at the conclusion of the annual Craft Brewers Conference, held in San Antonio that year. But, as one could guess from the previous years, the next competition was in 2020, and that was wiped out by the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic.
