The annual State College Brew Expo was held for the 17th year from 5-9pm on Saturday August 15, 2015, at Tussey Mountain Ski Resort in Happy Valley, Pennsylvania. This year around 40 breweries from across the nation were featured together with seminars and live music.
The breweries in attendance included a number from across Central PA, the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh areas, plus the likes of Atwater (Detroit, MI), Deschutes (Bend, OR), Goose Island (Chicago, IL), Lagunitas (Petaluma, CA), Magic Hat (Burlington, VT), Sam Adams (Boston, MA), and Southern Tier (Lakewood, NY) from further afield.
Live music was provided by Royal Benson (Central PA) followed by Anthony D’Amato (New Jersey).

Seminars were given by State College Homebrew Club (SCHC) and the author Ben Novak.
SCHC’s presentation provided an overview of the homebrewing process, different techniques, together with various equipment options. Attendees were encouraged to join the club’s Facebook Group for online discussions and to come along to a monthly meeting to find out more about the club and brewing. Handouts were also provided for the club’s first annual Pennsylvania Homebrew Open Competition that is scheduled for Dec 5, 2015.

Ben Novak is a retired local lawyer turned author who has recently written and published The Birth of the Craft Brew Revolution. In his seminar Dr. Novak discussed the joys and challenges of writing about beer including the process of finding inspiration and confronting misconceptions to the challenge of preaching deeper appreciation in a college town environment, where quantity often wins out over quality.
During the festival we enjoyed a wide range of beers, below are some of the day’s highlights:
