Pop Quiz: What’s the oldest brewing establishment in the Kansas City area? Boulevard, you say. Well, they’ve been around since 1989. Free State Brewing is a good guess, they’re celebrating 25 years. The correct answer, if you accept my vague definition of ‘brewing establishment’, is Bacchus and Barleycorn on Neiman Rd in Shawnee. If you’re not into homebrewing – or wine-making, cheese making or distilling – you may not have heard of them. But they first opened their doors back in the 1960s. (For reference, homebrewing wasn’t officially legal in the US until February 1979.) Jackie and Alberta Rager have owned Bacchus & Barleycorn since 1984, and they are celebrating their 30 years of ownership with a series of informative events at their Lenexa shop.
