Hardywood Saison Rustica Review 6/20/14 Hardywood is known for quality, so you can imagine my delight when they finally decided to move their product into Loudoun County. I picked this one up from my local Total Wine for about $10. With 4.5% ABV, 20 IBUs, a label touting star anise, peppercorn and Virginia lemongrass; the Rustica Saison is poised to be the perfect brew for Summer. The pour is a bright, cloudy, golden-orange hue that yields a thick frothy white head. The nose is Belgian yeast up front with slight hints of lemon zest, pepper and a bready malt backbone. Mouthfeel is solid with mild carbonation and a light, creamy body. The taste is fairly in line with the style. Belgian yeast is noticeable on the palate, but not overwhelming. The funky yeast fades into big crackery malt with shades of lemongrass and black pepper. The finish is light and crisp, however, I picked up on a fair amount of bitterness that was surprising for the measly 20 IBUs. When all is said and done, this … |
