Roughtail and a Writers’ Union

Union may be too strong a word, but we local and unpaid beer writers did get together over some beers.

Jay Aber from KC Beer Blog, Sarah from KC Beer Guide, and Alex Workman from Scouting the Taps met at my office to talk blogging, beer, and the state of the Kansas City craft beer scene. And to have a few, too.

Roughtail Brewing, a three-year-old brewery in Oklahoma City, is entering the Kansas side of the metro over the next couple of weeks. They graciously sent samples to Jay and Sarah, who even more graciously shared with Alex and me.

We opened the three beers – Pale Ale, IPA, and an Imperial IPA named Hoptometrist – in that order from low alcohol to high. The Pale Ale (Flavor Wave below) tasted much closer to an IPA. Huge waves of citrusy perfume burst from the can and only reluctantly slid aside for a light body with fringes of honey laced at the edges. A pale ale in name only, the beer did not possess enough body or malt to support the oversized American-hop presence.
