After an afternoon at PA Flavor, we stayed an extra night in Harrisburg (PA) to attend the 2nd Battle of the Homebrew Clubs which is the official homebrew competition of Harrisburg Beer Week.
The event was held at F.N.B. Field which is on City Island in the middle of the Susquehanna River and is the home of the Harrisburg Senators baseball team.
The event ran between 2-5pm and cost $30 and featured a number of local homebrew clubs including ReHAB (Harrisburg Area Brewers), Sons of Alchemy (Reigning champions from last year), YAHA (York), All-Grain Gangsters and others. There was also live music and food trucks.
The format of the competition was that each attendee was given 3 tokens to be used as follows by 4pm:
- White – vote for your #1 favorite beer.
- Black – vote for your #2 favorite beer.
- Red – vote for your favorite homebrew club.
My votes were as follows:
- #1 beer: American Strong Ale by ReHAB
(bourbon-barrel aged) - #2 beer: Monk Mayhem by ReHab
(Belgian inspired Dark Strong Ale – 8.2%, 40 IBUs) - Homebrew club: ReHAB
Overall champions 2016 – Sons of Alchemy
Below are some photos of beers that we tried:
I can highly recommend this homebrew event and I am hoping that my local homebrew club will be pouring there in 2017!
