Clarkston Union marriages food and beer in former church

When the Clarkston Union Bar & Kitchen opened 19 years ago, food was the focus. The menu, heavy with hearty comfort food with a unique edge, provided the character and substance. What surprises customers when they come for the food is the quality and variety of craft beer.

The Union has 34 beer taps in this refurbished 1840’s Baptist church where the marriage of great food with craft beer became natural. “Looking back,” explained Mike Yahner the Union Joints Beer Czar, “the Union was one of the original trailblazers of tap beer joints.”

“We have a 60-70% focus on Michigan beers with Bell’s, Founders and Short’s as our long standing relationships,” said Yahner. “It’s safe to say we beat the Michigan drums with beer.”

The three breweries have become the Union’s largest accounts over the years based on daily sales, tap takeovers and exclusive events.
